What is NSS?
NSS (National Service Scheme) is a flagship public service program under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India.
Launched in 1969 — the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi — NSS encourages students to engage in nation-building activities and community development.
Objectives of NSS
Develop personality and leadership skills through community service
Raise awareness about critical social issues such as health, education, environment, and sanitation
Promote volunteerism and a strong sense of responsibility among the youth
Build meaningful connections between students and rural communities

Each college typically runs an NSS unit with 100 student volunteers, led by an NSS Programme Officer
